As I started my journey into understanding the Affordable Care Act I found that much of the information is situational and there are many variables for a consumer to consider. The first concern that I had were the many variables that needs to be considered when applying for coverage. The next concern was the amount of exemptions that are also situational. What became overwhelmingly clear was the need for all consumers to have equal access in a format that is most easy for them to understand. Especially since the liability of coverage is with the consumer. I found my notes became more of a series of questions and finding the answers via Healthcare.gov. Between today and the January 31st deadline I will be sharing my process into better understanding the Marketplace, which allows consumers to comply with the Affordable Care Act. If you have a disability you may not need to be in the Marketplace. [Medicaid and CHIP](https://www.healthcare.gov/medicaid-chip/getting-medicaid-chip/) have funding to provide coverage to meet your medical fulfillment. 2. Medicaid has been [expanded in some states](https://www.healthcare.gov/medicaid-chip/medicaid-expansion-and-you/) to cover all/more people. #### What Do I Need to Know About the Affordable Care Act? 1. Here’s an [informational index about the law](https://www.hhs.gov/healthcare/about-the-aca/index.html), cost, coverage, care. #### What Plans are Offered Under the Affordable Care Act? [Healthcare.gov](https://www.healthcare.gov/see-plans/) will ask you to enter your ZIP code and will show you the options that are available in your state. #### What is the Timeline for Coverage Under the Affordable Care Act? Open Enrollment began November 1, 2015 and continues through January 31, 2016. #### Are There Exemptions to the Affordable Care Act? There are specific exemptions from fees, find out if you qualify for an exemption [here](https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/exemption/). There are also [exemptions from healthcare](https://www.healthcare.gov/health-coverage-exemptions/forms-how-to-apply/), healthcare fees and other exemptions. #### My State Has Not Expanded Medicaid; What Can I Do? If your state has not expanded the Medicaid program there are other options through local clinics. If you cannot obtain coverage you may qualify for an exemption.
